Journeys

The right place at the right moment.

Timing is a form of knowledge. The difference between a journey that is merely good and one that is genuinely moving is often a matter of weeks.

Spring · March–May

KyotoTokyoHakone

Japan in bloom.

The sakura peaks for five to eight days and then falls. Timed correctly, it is one of the great natural spectacles. We plan Japan spring journeys from January, because by February the best accommodation is gone.

Summer · June–August

MauiBig IslandKauai

Hawaii, before the crowds.

June is the last quiet month before the summer rush. The water is warm, the whale season has ended but the green sea turtles remain, and the north shore of Oahu is at its calmest.

Autumn · September–November

SeoulBusanGyeongju

Korea and the turning light.

Seoul in October, when the summer heat lifts and the city enters its most beautiful season. The palaces are still warm stone. The food markets are at their fullest. The light turns gold by three in the afternoon.

Winter · December–February

UbudSeminyakSidemen

Bali in the dry months.

December through February is Bali's wet season — and precisely when fewer visitors arrive. The island is quieter, the temples are less crowded, and the light after morning rain is extraordinary.

Seasonal journeys book early. The best rooms go first.

The properties and experiences that define a seasonal journey are limited by design. We recommend beginning the conversation at least three months in advance.
